This is a book where all the case studies and references are for “proper” change - regime change in Serbia, Indian independence, the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, the Arab Spring -exploring why some were more successful than others.

It feels very complementary to Kotter’s ‘Accelerate’, focusesing on networks, on viral organic change, steered but not managed.

The combination of the theory and the practical stuff fitted together really nicely. It’s well written and easy to read, and not being too long.

All in all, highly recommended, and I’d be really interested in hearing what others make of it.

The book uses Case Studies to represent moments of change. The Orange Revolution stood out to me the most. The difference in Ukraine between the successful group was through a more fun approach that connected with people. It out did the direct opposition politically fuelled group. Netflix resonated because I briefly remember going to the a DVD shop to rent Spiderman Two and also because my Dad wished he invited Netflix. Focusing on Netflix and how it networked, it was innovative but gave people more autonomy (which links nicely to our book of the month) and it grew organically.

“Values are most powerful when they speak to shared human experience,” is important for change. Gandhi in India, MLK in America or the Orange Revolution, they all sparked because of a shared human experience and a belief for change. Applying this to a workplace is easy but making the all workplaces actually change is the challenge.
